No. This is perhaps the biggest myth in BJJ. You don't get in shape for Jiu Jitsu; you use Jiu Jitsu to get in shape. The movements are unique—using muscles you didn't know you had—so the best way to build "mat cardio" is simply by showing up and training.

10th Planet Tempe is a No Gi Jiu Jitsu Academy. We require anyone that is training to wear a rashguard and shorts.
If this is your first class or a trial class please wear a more fitted t-shirt, shorts or spats.
Please refrain from loose or baggy fitting clothes; no pants and no shorts with zippers or pockets are allowed on the mats.

Gi: You wear a traditional heavy cotton uniform (kimono). You can use the fabric of the jacket and pants to grab, control, and choke your opponent. It is often described as "slower and more technical."
No-Gi: You wear shorts and a "rash guard" (tight athletic shirt). Since there are no grips to hold onto, the game is much faster, more athletic, and relies on clinching, overhooks and underhooks.

Never. There are practitioners who start in their 40s, 50s, and even 60s. While you might not be training for a world championship, this martial art can be adapted to any age or physical limitation by focusing on technique and efficiency rather than explosiveness.

Wash your gear: Always wear a clean rash guard, shorts/spats. Hygiene is the #1 rule in a grappling gym.
Trim your nails: Long fingernails or toenails can cause accidental scratches (and they hurt!).
Leave your ego at the door: You will get tapped out by people smaller or younger than you. It’s part of the learning process.
